Iowa- Effigy Mounds National Monument
The Effigy Mounds National Monument is located in Harpers Ferry, Iowa on the Mississippi River, just across and north of the city of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. The park is beautiful, and there is a visitor center, and many trails. The park includes more than 200 prehistoric Indian mounds. The trails go past the mounds, and have educational signs up, so you can learn about the specific mound, and the people that built them.
The visitor center also has several exhibits about the location, and history about the area, from prehistoric times to the present. I went on one trail that went up the bluff, then traveled along the edge of the bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. It was very pretty, and not anything like what I expected Iowa to look like.
