Missouri - Harry S. Truman National Historic Site

The Harry S. Truman National Historic Site is located in Truman's hometown of Independence, Missouri. It consists of a Visitors Center, which is located on one of the downtown streets, and his home, which is a very short distance away. The Visitor's Center has a film about his life, as well as a few historical displays and a small shop. The film was very insightful, and covered Truman's life in Independence, as well as his life in the White House.

Truman became the President of the United States in 1945, after the death of Franklyn D Roosevelt. He was then reelected in 1948, and served as President until 1953. During his time as President, the country was recovering from WWII, and he is credited with successfully guiding the country through economic difficulties after the war, as well as for beginning to deal with civil rights.

The Truman House was closed for remodeling when I was there, and could only be seen from the street. The house was actually one that was in his wife's family, and he moved in there after their marriage. His cousins grew up across the street in a much less prestigious home (the Nolan home) and it was when he was visiting his cousins that he met his future wife. He lived in the Truman House from 1919 to 1972.
