Mississippi - Tupelo National Battlefield

I am currently on a long trip to visit several National Park Service properties. In the middle of this trip, I have two conferences I am going to for work, so the breakup is nice. This leg of the trip has me driving from Birmingham to Memphis, then on to Hot Springs, into Louisiana, then on to Austin. I am stopping at several sites along the way.

In Tupelo, I visited the Natches Trace Parkway, then made my way to the Tupelo National Battlefield. It is a very small park, only about an acre, but the ranger at the Natches Trace Parkway Visitor Center had given me great directions, and a little history on the site. She was very helpful.

Once there, I went to the large monument in the park. Being from Wisconsin, I don't have a great sense of history on the Civil War, and having the information on the monument dedicated to the people who lost their lives, AT THIS SITE, was very moving. There were a few gravestones at the site as well, but it is unfortunate that the city had grown up around the site and most of the historic battlefield is filled with buildings.

The official website for the Tupelo National Battlefield is at the NPS website at: https://www.nps.gov/tupe/index.htm
