Kansas - Dwight D Eisenhower Presidential Museum and Library

The Dwight D Eisenhower presidential museum and library is not part of the National Park System - it is actually a property of the US Library of Congress. It is located in rural Abilene, Kansas, and I stopped here on my way from Oklahoma City to the Homestead National Historic Monument in Nebraska.

The site consists of several acres, and on the site is Dwight Eisenhower's boyhood home, a museum dedicated to him, his gravesite, the presidential library, a visitors center / gift shop and a chapel. I went to the library, where they had a film on the life of Eisenhower.

The film went through Eisenhower's life, and it was heavily weighted on his military career before his presidency. He was the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in the European stage of WWII, and was instrumental on the allies success. They didn't talk much about his presidency, but did have one sentence that I thought was most important - that he was the leader that started the interstate highway program.

It was interesting to see what a small, rural community this was, and to see the area that this great man grew up in. It shows that it doesn't matter who you know, or how much money you have, there is opportunity for everyone in the US. The website for this location is at: https://www.eisenhower.archives.gov/
