Nebraska - Lewis & Clark National Visitors Center

The Lewis & Clark National Visitors Center is located along the Missouri River in Omaha, Nebraska. The Visitor Center is located in the same building as the Regional NPS office building. The visitor center has similar items as every other NPS visitor center - it has a store, museum exhibits and a film. Unfortunately, the film was not working, as they were renovating the theater.

The ranger, was very helpful, and discussed with me the ways the pioneers were able to cross the Missouri River. He said that the crossing was actually quite controversial, and there was a lot of people that were trying to control the traffic across. There was a ferry, and eventually a railroad. Each thought the other should go away, and there were lawsuits regarding this back in the day. The lawyer for one of the sides was Abraham Lincoln.

The City of Omaha has made an effort to have Pioneer inspired artwork in and around the City. I came across a HUGE statue of pioneers moving along the trail. This is not part of the NPS property - but impressive nonetheless.

Outside, there is a bike and pedestrian path that apparently goes for miles. I walked north, over a beautiful bridge (designed by HNTB - argh). The hike was nice, with information along the way about the Missouri River. For more information on this site, visit the NPS website at: https://www.nps.gov/lecl/planyourvisit/leclvchq2b.htm
