Arizona - Pipe Spring National Monument
On the way to the airport from our nice stay in SW Utah, we stopped in Arizona at the Pipe Spring National Monument. We didn't stay long, since we were all pretty tired from the Angel's Landing hike the day before, and the drive that we still had to make. However, we stopped in this cross-roads of a town, and visited this National Monument. At the visitor's center, there is a movie that talks about the native peoples that lived in the area, and how the Mormans came to this area to escape the rules of the United States. At the time the mormans came, this part of the country was Mexico, however, within about 10 years, it became the United States, and once again, the Mormans were forced to adhere to the rules of the US.
At the same time, the native people and the mormans were clashing over land. Specifically, the Mormons thought you could OWN land, while the native people felt that the land was not owned. This National Monument is here to describe the struggles of the two peoples, the struggles they had between each other, in addition to the struggles they both had with the US Government. This particular spot, where the monument is located, was the source of many battles, since there is a spring here, which is the source of some of the only fresh water for miles.
