Oregon - Newberry National Volcanic Monument

Writer's picture: MTNestWandererMTNestWanderer

After leaving Mt. Hood, I was headed to Crater Lake along Hwy 97. As I was driving, I came across a sign for the "Newberry National Volcanic Monument", so I pulled off the highway for a visit. I got to the visitor center, and there was a Ranger Talk going on outside on the patio. The Ranger was talking about the formation of volcanos, and the specific volcano that was right there - Lava Butte. After the talk, I got on a shuttle bus that transported us up to the top of the Lava Butte cinder cone. It was pretty neat - the view over the land showed very clearly where the lava flow was, and you could see the black lava with no vegetation, clearly outlined by the trees where the lava had stopped.
