South Carolina - Kings Mountain National Military Park

This was the third full day of a 9 day long road trip, and it was my intention to wake up from my hotel in Princeton WV, which is only a few miles from the border of Virginia, and to do a hike in Virginia on my way south in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, but it was not to be. It was raining, about 34 degrees and very very foggy in the morning. I ended up driving south through Virginia and North Carolina, and going straight to the Kings Mountain National Military Park in northern South Carolina. By the time I got there, the weather had warmed up a bit, and the fog and rain were gone.

At Kings Mountain, I went to the visitor center, listed to the movie and learned quite a bit about the Revolutionary War. That really isn't saying much, since I really never knew ANYTHING about the Revolutionary War, other than that England lost. At this location, the revolutionaries overtook the Torys, and it was apparently one of the first times that that had happened. The battle that took place here, on the top of Kings Mountain, was a turning point in the war.

At the Visitor Center, there is a tour that goes around the top of the mountain, for a total of 1.5 miles. Along the way, they gave you a phone number to call, and it had information at a bunch of stops along the way. It had great information, but walking in the woods, learning about war, and blood and guts and gore was a bit surreal. I learned a lot, and it ended up being a good day.
