California / Nevada - Humbolt Toiyabe National Forest

On this day, Matt moved out of Cloyne Court at UC Berkeley. For Matt, it was a great place for school, and an eye-opening experience. The University and the living situation at Cloyne allowed him to interact with people from all over the world, and be in close proximity with people of all different backgrounds. This experience was invaluable. But, today he moved out.

I had arrived at Cloyne on the 17th, and Matt met me at the airport, so we could be together to get the SUV we rented. Luckily for us, the rental company now had an issue with making Matt a 2nd driver, and although it seemed like a pain at the time, we ended up with a larger vehicle, a minivan, from a different company at the last minute, and because of the generosity of one of the workers at the desk, we actually paid much less. We packed most things in the van on the 17th, finishing up in the morning of the 18th. There was a TON of things. Matt wasn't exactly packed and ready to go like I thought he was going to be. As we packed, we made sure to leave a bit of room in the back seat for Angee, who would meet up with us part way through.

The trip from Berkeley to Brookfield was going to be an epic roadtrip, and we figured we might as well make the most of it along the way, so the plan was to stop when we wanted to stop, and to see things we probably wouldn't get back to. So, the first leg of the trip was relatively short. We set off from Berkeley, and traveled to Crystal Bay, California. It is actually half in California and half in Nevada. It sits in the Humbolt Tioyabe National Forest, on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. It was about a 4 hour drive from where we started.

Once in Crystal Bay, we set out for the "Historic Stateline Fire Lookout" hike. It was a pretty short hike up the side of a hill, ending at an awesome spot overlooking Lake Tahoe. It was beautiful! On top, we met a family that was hiking. The daughter went to college in Crystal Bay and was majoring in marine biology - her lab was in Lake Tahoe. Not a bad life! After a short hike around and back down, we continued on our way east, ending in Elko, Nevada for the night.
