Virginia - George Washington Birthplace National Monument

This is the first stop on a quick solo road trip out east to see some interesting National Park Service Properties. After landing in Baltimore, it was a quick trip down to Colonial Beach Virginia and the George Washington Birthplace National Monument.

George Washington was born here, and lived here for a few years before moving to another one of his father's properties. There was some interesting facts about life in the 1700's here. The Washington Family had owned and worked this land for three generations before George was born, and they had many dozen (100's?) of slaves. During that time, a person was given more land based on how many people they had to feed, which included the number of slaves. So, the Washington family had a LOT of land.

As usual, the Visitor Center film was very interesting, and talked about the times of the day. The buildings on the property are not from the 1700's, but were built in the 1930's to depict what life was like in the 1700's. The tour was good, with information about the land itself, but also the building of the community along the Potomac River.
