West Virginia - Harpers Ferry National Historic Park
I am trying to visit a National Park Service property in every state. I take road trips, and plan my itinerary based on which NPS properties are on the way. I had been on a solo road trip of the eastern states, and was going to be near Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, so I stopped in.
A very large part of the city of Harpers Ferry, WV is operated by the National Park Service. The buildings were all falling into disrepair in the 1930's, and a group of people rallied to save the properties due to their historical significance. Later, the National Park Service took over. It is kinda cool, walking along a city street, and then the next building is an exhibit. As with most of the rest of this area, there is a huge military history for the area, but the piece I found interesting was the story of John Brown and his attempt in 1859 to abolish slavery. It didn't work, and he was hung for his efforts, but the episode helped the movement go forward.
It was raining in Harpers Ferry while I was there, but it was an interesting place, with a lot of buildings to explore, so all was good.
