Alabama - Little River Canyon National Preserve
Over the last several years, I have been attempting to visit a National Park Service property in each state. As of this trip, I have only a handful of states where I have not yet done this. Alabama and Georgia are two of the states that I still need to visit. So, during COVID, as I got more stir crazy in my house, I decided to go on a road trip to Alabama and Georgia. To do this safely, I decided I would camp in my campervan along the way, to minimize any contact with others.
One of the places I wanted to stop at was the Little River Canyon National Preserve. Because of COVID, the nearest camping to that spot was at the DeSoto State Park, so I did not spend much time at the preserve, but what I did see and do was nice. The Little River Waterfall is a highlight of the area, along with miles of hiking trails. I stopped by a few of the waterfall overlooks and hiked to the bottom of the canyon from one of the trailheads. It was nice.
The stay at DeSoto State Park campground was interesting – when I checked in, they gave me a list of cable channels, which I thought was odd for a campground, until I saw that most of the big campers had a large screen tv or movie screen set up. Alabama was playing that night, and all the screens were on. ROLL TIDE I took several hikes in the state park, where there were a lot of small waterfalls to visit.
