April Class - Craft Bar in Minneapolis

My oldest daughter is an artist. I don’t mean just someone that likes to do art. I mean, she creates art for a living, and has a college degree in Fine Arts, and is a bona fide artist. So, when I do art with her, I feel a bit like an imposter, but I LOVE to do art with her!

I went to visit her and her partner in Minneapolis. I told her that I wanted to go DO something, then take them out to dinner – she knew JUST the thing!! Since my last visit, this cool venue opened up called Upstairs Circus – basically a craft BAR. You go in, pick a craft from a menu, then do it while you sip drinks.

PERFECT!!!

So, we went, and I picked a string craft, my daughter picked a bracelet, and her partner picked concrete coasters. We picked up our supplies and got to work!

It was fun! Occasionally, one of the staff members would come around to see if we had questions, but if they felt like you were doing OK, they would leave you alone – it was just the right amount of attention. The supplies were easily accessible, and the layout of the room was great. When you go, you sign up for a specific time, and everyone in the room is starting at around the same time, so as you are working, you can see how others are progressing.

I loved it! I picked a bird for my craft – since when I don’t know what to make, I end up making the same bird. I now have the bird in glass, string art, metal art, paint… you get the idea.

Things I learned:

1. This is a great idea, and we need this kind of thing in my city!

2. The concrete coasters were super cool, and the concrete was ready to paint in about 20 minutes!

3. It’s a blast to do crafts with other people, and when each person can do a different thing, its even better!
