December 2021 Class - Fused Glass Ornaments in Brookfield

In mid-November, I was beginning to wonder what class I would be taking in December and started looking up some local options. I found a location that I didn’t know existed before, and it is super close to home! The Art n Soul Design Studio is close, has creative classes and has hours that work for me. PERFECT. I signed up for a Fused Glass ornament class, and then sent a message to my siblings to see if anyone wanted to join me. Jeanne took me up on it.

We arrived a bit early and were able to look around the shop a bit. Neither of us had been there before, nor had we heard of the location. That is a bit embarrassing, since we both live nearby. Soon, the other students arrived, and we settled in at our stations to cut some glass and create a few ornaments. The instructor had a ton of equipment available to us, as well as many photos for inspiration. She came around and gave some tips on might work better and such as well. It was organized and fun!

The basic instructions are to cut up glass and make a design that when fused will look like an ornament – there aren’t many rules. We did need to make sure there was something on top to hold the ornament hanger, but other than that, we were free to create whatever we wanted.

The actual fusing of the ornaments was going to be taking place off site, so we put light glue on each of the pieces and arranged them on a cookie sheet for the instructor. She took them home and we picked them up a few days later. The results were super cute!

I am going to be watching the Art n Soul website for other classes. These turned out great!

A few of the key take away from the session:

1. Glass is sharp – be careful and have the right tools.

2. Use the glue very sparingly to just set the pieces in place temporarily. Once it is melted, everything will be stuck.

3. Simplicity is good – the ornaments that people made that were simple looked nice.
