Georgia - Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield

While on my road trip to the south eastern states, I needed to visit a National Park Property in Georgia. Since I was in the Atlanta area, I went to all three of the locations in one day. First, I visited the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield.

I had been warned to get there early, or the parking lot may be full, so that’s what I did. With COVID, I was expecting the Visitor Center to be closed, but it was open, and I was able to look through the museum. There, I learned about the importance of the Civil War battle at Kennesaw Mountain, and how it was crucial to the fall of Atlanta. The information stated that over 30% of Atlanta was burned to the ground in the fall, and I had seen some markers in the village of Stone Mountain referencing the burning as well. I’m sure that there are many people from Atlanta today who had ancestors that lived through that.

The hike to the top of the mountain was my second mile-long uphill hike in Georgia in as many days. This time, there was much more woods compared to the bald rock hike of Stone Mountain. It was pretty, and once at the top, there is a great view of Atlanta and the surrounding area. I got back to the campervan around 11am, and sure enough – the parking lot was FULL. Cars were circling and waiting for a spot.

This was a nice hike and I learned more about the Civil War and the fall of Atlanta.

Definitely worth the time!
