Kentucky - Cumberland Gap National Historic Park

I was on my way to Penland, North Carolina, and doing a rare long day of driving. As I was traveling along, listening to my book on tape, and blindly following Siri’s directions, I noticed a sign on the side of the road indicating that the Cumberland Gap NHP was up ahead!

I had been to this park before but had explored a different area of the park. This time, I decided to take a short hike near the Visitor Center. It was beautiful – and went up up up, then down down down. I think it was about a 2-mile loop, all through the woods. Very pretty, and a very nice break for a long drive.

At the visitor center, there were a few people dressed in old timey attire, and they were demonstrating some old timey things. The lady I talked to was quilting. It was nice, and right off the highway, and in all, a nice diversion.

A few of the key take away from this:

1. Being open to diverting from a plan usually ends up with having some great memories.

2. The Cumberland Gap VC has a lot of bat-related items for sale, but I don’t really know why.

3. Once again, if you hang around the entrance sign long enough, there will be someone that comes along to take your photo in exchange for you taking theirs – it never fails!
