March 2022 "Class" - Soap at Home

I had told myself that I would do a class every month, and this month, I really haven’t found a class that worked with my time, and that I was interested in taking. I was spending so much time on the door project at my sons’ house, that I just wasn’t motivated to take a class. Regardless, I felt like I had to try something new, and I decided to go to the craft store and find a kit to make something I had never made before. Not quite a class, but between the door project and this kit, I am justifying my transgression.

I ended up with a soap making kit. I was hopeful, since this is one class that I will take some day, and I was hoping it would give me a taste for the craft.

It did not.

The kit was basically finished soap in a block, that you melted in the microwave, add a little fragrance, and color to, and pour it into a mold. I guess I should have realized that I wouldn’t be cooking up lye and mixing multiple colors and shapes with a $20 kit.

Regardless, I did the things, and I made the soap. They included some powdered oatmeal to add some exfoliation if you wanted, and I added that too. The soap turned out rather nice, but not very fancy. Some day – I’ll learn how to do it the right way.

Things I learned:

1. A $20 kit is not going to teach you much of anything.

2. If you wanted to make soap with a child under 8, this kit would be nice.

3. I will pay for a class next time.
