New York - Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor

The Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor extends across the entire length of New York, and I ran into it several times along my road trip, but had a more in-depth experience while in Lockport, New York. I was staying the night in this town, and in the evening, I took a stroll downtown and visited the Historic Flight of Five Locks. I was surprised to find out that even though it was the evening, and the visitor shop was closed, I was able to walk out there and wander around and on top of the locks. It was super cool!


On the locks, there were several informative signs that explained what was happening at each location and gave some history about the locks and how they were used to carry goods and people east and west. To learn more, check the NPS site for the Corridor
