New York - Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural NHS

This was an unusual site, and I was curious to get inside and learn about it.

In 1901, Buffalo NY was hosting the Pan American Exposition, and it was attended by President William McKinley. The President was shot during the event and was assassinated.

When the Vice President, Theodore Roosevelt learned of the shooting, he headed straight to Buffalo. He arrived after the President died, and it was determined that a quick inauguration was needed due to the intensity of the events. The most appropriate site was determined to be the home of the Wilcox’s, who were acquaintances of Roosevelt, and had a home worthy of the event.

At the site, the home has been set up to show off items from the 1901 Pan American Exposition, and there is information on the assassination and the inauguration. Very interesting! Learn more about this interesting moment in history at the NPS website for the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural NHS.
