Road Trip Review - New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio - 1730 miles
FINALLY on another road trip! It’s been a long time, and I’ve been thinking about why I’ve been putting off going on a trip. There have been the obvious reasons – major surgery for my youngest child with recovery time is high up there, but obviously also it’s the time of COVID.
Most people would think I would stay home because of my concerns about contracting COVID while out of town, but I actually probably interact with more people when I am home. When I am traveling in my minivan, I stay at campsites and hike – both of which keep me away from most people. What has been keeping me home during COVID is more the reduced amount of stress in my life. You see, before COVID, it seemed that my life and my job were much busier – I was always supposed to be somewhere or doing something. Now, life has slowed down, and working from home 3 days a week allows me to keep up with mundane housework that would have otherwise taken up my time. I am realizing that my trips were a way to escape for a bit and get some time away from all the hubbubs. Now, not so much.
Regardless, I took a trip to the Finger Lakes region of New York state, and as usual, visiting some National Park Service properties on the way. In addition, I have added a few classes to take along the route and am super excited to talk about them.
On each trip, I try to reflect on something I learned that might help me or other solo travelers on their own adventure. This time, there were a few things. First, if you are supposed to camp, but there are tornado and flash flood warnings for the area, it’s perfectly OK to change your plans and get a hotel! Second, if you schedule an experience, and it doesn’t turn out like you expected, just move on, and try it again somewhere else – it might be amazing!! (Thanks Glass Bubble Project).
