Tennessee - Stones River National Battlefield

Writer: MTNestWandererMTNestWanderer

On the way south on my Wisconsin to Georgia Road Trip, I stopped in Tennessee at the Stones River National Battlefield. I stop at every National Park Service property I come across while road tripping, and I don’t know much about the Civil War. I wasn’t sure when I got there if I would learn much, since with COVID, the park website said the Visitor Center was closed.

When I got there, however, I learned that the Visitor Center was only MOSTLY closed, and I was able to go through the museum part of the Visitor Center, but not see the informational video about the location. The museum told the story of the battle that occurred in December 1862 at this location. It is considered one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.

I’m not one to really enjoy military and war history, and even though I learned a bit about the war, I was eager to get outside. This park has miles of paths for hiking and biking, and there are a few informational signs along the way. I got out my bike, and took a ride through the battlefield, stopping and learning about what part of the battle took place at each location. It was a nice fall day, and my stop here was enjoyable.
